7. Joan spoke about an up-coming consortium for good government which will be held at the Universalist Church in late October this year.

11. Bonnie gave a short report on her recent visit to the Piketon uranium enrichment plant.

12. Garciella spoke of her recent trip to Venezuela and the new movement forming in South America that encourages a “participating democracy” and a sharing of resources with other countries. An example of this is Venezuela and Cuba: Venezuela provides oil to Cuba, and Cuba is sending doctors, dentists, agricultural engineers to Venezuela for 3 year stints and also is sending its educational materials and programs to Venezuela. What is happening is a network is being created in S. America that brings hope to the people.

CENTRAL OHIOANS FOR PEACE
May 17, 2004 Minutes

Rabbi Howard Apothaker spoke on the meaning of “shalom”. The program touched on some of the simpler meanings of shalom as viewed in various verses from the Old Testament, such as: Genesis, Chapter 37 verses 12-14 when Jacob sent Joseph to check on his brothers and the flock, and told him to see “how they’re faring” or about their “well-being” using the word shalom; Exodus, Chapter 4, verse 18 when Moses is going to see Jethro and see if his people are still alive (shalom), and Moses’ father-in-law wishes him well (shalom), etc. The most in-depth statement made on “shalom” was that in Jewish belief the world is built on three things: legal judgment, humane balance and shalom. Through legal judgment and humane balance, one comes to shalom. Some questions and comments were made at the end of the program.

Treasurer’s report: Total income to date: $2143.75 and net after encumbered: $1,427.63. Now have 38 paid COFP members.

Bob passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteers for the up-coming PowWow.

COFP non-profit status should be in motion this week, and articles of incorporation have been filed.

CENTRAL OHIOANS FOR PEACE
May 3, 2004 Minutes

A viewing of the documentary “People and the Land” was showed in the main sanctuary on a large screen. The 1997 documentary was filmed by Professor Haynes from Ohio University. The documentary is about Israel’s occupation of the territories. It puts viewers into the universe of an occupied people, unreeling images of a new form of apartheid based on ethnicity. The documentary examines the concrete realities of Israel’s conduct in the West Bank and Gaza, the level of U.S. support for that conduct through foreign aid, and the human cost of that aid in Palestine and the U.S.

The documentary gave viewers a brief glimpse of the cruel physical and emotional abuses the Palestinian people have been living with for decades and continue to live with under the Israeli occupation. This occupation goes against the Geneva Conventions and many United Nations’ resolutions.

After the screening, Mary Yoder, who has been in Palestine as a member of the Christian Peacemaker Team, talked about her experiences while in Palestine and answered questions from the COFP group.
